Svenska Tobaks AB and the Tobacco Factory in Härnösand, Sundsvall

Svenska Tobaks AB, originally known as AB Svenska Tobaksmonopolet and commonly referred to as Tobaksbolaget, played a central role in Sweden’s tobacco industry during the 20th century. One of its most prominent facilities was the Tobacco Factory in Härnösand, which became a significant player in both local and national tobacco production.

The Establishment of AB Svenska Tobaksmonopolet

In 1915, the Swedish government established AB Svenska Tobaksmonopolet as a state monopoly to control and streamline tobacco production in the country. The goal was to centralize manufacturing and increase state revenue through taxation of tobacco products. The monopoly led to the acquisition of all privately owned tobacco factories, including the one in Härnösand.

The Tobacco Factory in Härnösand

The Tobacco Factory in Härnösand had a long history even before it was taken over by the state. Founded in 1877 as Hernösands Tobaksfabriks Aktiebolag, it quickly became one of Scandinavia’s leading tobacco producers. By the time of nationalization, the factory was the largest in Sweden and had a turnover exceeding all other Swedish factories combined.

Rationalization and Centralization

Following the nationalization, Tobaksmonopolet undertook extensive rationalization of the tobacco industry. Production was concentrated into a few factories to increase efficiency. The Härnösand factory was one of the facilities that survived this centralization and continued operations under state ownership.

Transformation into Svenska Tobaks AB

In 1961, the monopoly on the import and sale of tobacco was abolished, leading to the restructuring of AB Svenska Tobaksmonopolet into Svenska Tobaks AB (STA) in 1967. The increased competition following the end of the monopoly prompted further rationalization within the company. Only four factories remained: Malmö, Gothenburg, Arvika, and Härnösand.

Later Development and Closure

During the 1970s, Svenska Tobaks AB was integrated into Statsföretag AB, later known as Procordia AB. This period was characterized by additional restructuring and changes within the tobacco industry. Eventually, tobacco production in Härnösand was discontinued, and the factory building was repurposed for other uses. Today, the former tobacco factory stands as a landmark in Härnösand and houses various businesses, reflecting its historical significance and adaptability over time.

Summary

Svenska Tobaks AB and the Tobacco Factory in Härnösand played crucial roles in Sweden’s tobacco industry during the 20th century. From state monopolies and centralization to restructuring and eventual closure, their history mirrors the broader changes in Swedish industry and economy during this period.
